If we leave something on water
surface, something will float and something will sink, “why this difference?”
For example, take two same size ball which is made up of different materials,
one is made up of rubber and another one is made up of steel. Now! Leave these
two balls on water surface; rubber ball is floating but, steel ball is sinking.
When compare weight of both balls, steel is greater than rubber. “Is weight
reason for sinking?”, if it is yes, then thousand tone of weight ship is
floating on water, “how is it possible? “. Let see science behind two balls. If
we cut these two balls equally, inside the rubber ball, there is vacuum space.
Those things have vacuum inside and closed outside called as “hollow”. Rubber
ball molecules are occupied only on outer surface of the ball, as a result
density of rubber ball only in the outer surface, so that; density of rubber
ball is very low. But; steel ball don’t have any vacuum space inside. A
molecule of steel ball is occupied in whole volume of the ball as a result
density of steel ball higher than rubber ball. According to “Archimedes”
principle, “any object fully or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by
a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object”. If any
object wants to float on water, density of the object immersed in water should
be equal or lesser to density of water displaced by object. Steel molecules are
very closer to each other, than rubber molecules, it is called as tightly
packed molecules. For example, in a room, where can be only ten people sit,
there fifty peoples have seated, "how would it be?” as same way steel
molecules are more than rubber molecules. Basically, liquid molecules have more
gaps with each other, than solid molecules. If steel ball wants to float on water,
it should be design as hallow. Even it is hollow, total volume of molecular
density should be decreased, then; steel density will be equal or less to water
density. Now! It will float while we leave it to on water. While ship floats on
water, density of ship submerged in water will be equal to density of water
displaced by ship. As a result, while ship is trying to sink in water, upward
buoyancy force will act to opposite to ship and push ship to upward. Due to
buoyancy force, ship will shake up and down while is travelling. If, loaded
payload more than withstand capacity of ship, density of ship will be greater
than water; it will lead to sink ship in water. If, we make to sink a rubber
ball, after removing force, it will come out of water. Because, there is no
whole water enter into ball. If it is a hole, water will enter into ball and
increase its density, it will lead to sink ball in water. But, once ship sinks,
it can’t be come out of water even after remove the payload, because; water
will increase density of ship. Ships are made up of; wood, ply wood, steel,
aluminium and composite. Whatever the material ship is made of; its density
must be equal or less to density of water. From this video, we have learned;
size, weight and material are not a reason to float or sink any object in
water. Only the reason is density of material.
