வரலாற்றில் இன்று - ஒளியின் வேகத்தை கண்டு பிடித்து இன்று 377 ஆண்டுகள் நிறைந்துள்ளது - டிசம்பர் 7, 1676. ஒளியின் வேகத்தை முதலில் கண்டுபிடிக்க முயற்சி எடுத்தவர் கலீலியோதான். ஆயினும் அது துல்லியமானது அல்ல. வியாழனின் (Jupiter) நான்கு துணைக்கோள்கள் உண்டாக்கும் கிரகணத்தை கண்டுபிடித்து இருந்த சமயம் அது. கோள்கள் வட்டப்பாதையை எடுக்காமல், நீள்வட்டப்பாதையை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் என்பது தெரியும். அப்படியிருக்கும்போது, வியாழனில் கிரகணம் எப்போதும்போல நடந்தாலும், பூமியின் அருகில் இருக்கும்போது, நாம் அதை உடனே பார்க்க முடியும். அதுவே தொலைவில் இருக்கும்போது, அங்கிருந்து ஒளி நம்மை வந்தடையும் நேரம் அதிகம். இதை வைத்து டென்மார்க் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த ஒலஸ் ரோமர் எனும் இயற்பியல் ஆய்வாளர் ஒளியின் வேகத்தை கண்டுபிடித்தார். வெற்றிடத்தில் ஒளி வேகம் விநாடிக்கு 299,792,458 மீட்டர்களாகும்.இதனை 2.99*108ms−1 அல்லது 3*108ms−1 (வெற்றிடத்தில் மட்டும்) என்றும் கூறலாம்.ஒளியின் வேகம் ஒரு மாறிலி (constant) ஆகும். இந்த ஒளியின் வேகத்தைக் கொண்டுதான் கோள்களுக்கிடையிலான தூரங்களை அளவிட்டு கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார்கள்.
